Bill Burville
BURVILLE: William Edward (Bill) – Passed away at the Brantford General Hospital, on Sunday, May 24, 2020 in his 96th year. Predeceased by his first wife Ida May (Sapsford) Burville. Beloved spouse and partner of 25 years Rita Marie McDonald. Predeceased by his parents Harry and Harriet (Selves) Burville. Dear father of Harry. Loving grandfather to Christopher Burville, Leah Mattingley and great-grandfather to Evan and Grace Mattingley. Predeceased by his brothers Victor and Leslie. Bill served in WWII with the R.C.A.F. from 1943-1945 and was a retired employee from Dominion Foundries and Steel. Cremation has taken place. David MacDonald
Suddenly, on Saturday, May 9th, 2020, David MacDonald passed away. Beloved husband of the late Mary Lou Hart Rutherford. Loving Stepfather to Ryan (Christine) Rutherford, and Sarah (Derrick) Shanahan. Proud Grandpa to Madeline and Nolan. Son of the late Gordon and Isla of Port Dover, Ontario. Brother to Brent “Mick”, Lorie (late Pete) and Denys (Maureen). David will also be deeply missed by his many nieces, nephews, and friends. David retired from the Ministry of Natural Resources in 2016 after a 35-year career. David was also an active Board Member for the Brain Injury Association Peterborough Region, and fulfilled a love of travel since retiring. A celebration of David’s life will be held at a later date. Michael Smith
SMITH, Michael J.A., passed away after a lengthy illness at University Hospital London on Saturday, May 16, 2020 in his 53rd year. Loving father of Isabella, Jessica, Kayla and Duncan. Dear grandson of Bessie Smith. Michael was a transport driver for many years. He also served in the Canadian Armed Forces and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #158 Port Dover. Michael was a member of a Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed being home spending time with his children. Services will remain private. John Hankforth
HANKFORTH, John Harry, of Toledo, Ohio, formerly of Port Dover, passed away peacefully in his 87th year. Predeceased by his wife Margaret (nee Waters) (January 29, 2017). Dear father of Amy Malloni and John Jr., and a loving grandfather. John will be sadly missed by his sisters Kathleen (John deceased) and Cecelia (Milan), and his many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by 3 brothers, 1 sister and a son-in-law. John was a kind and gentle man, he always had a smile for everyone. He had a deep faith that he drew strength and comfort from. He was a member of Pilgrim Church in Toledo. John served in the United States Navy as a young man. He will be missed by his friends at church and West Park Place. Cremation has taken place. Thomas Wilbur Post
POST, Thomas Wilbur, “TW” (June 27,1920 – April 25, 2020) – An almost 100 year old visionary who’s inventions revolutionized an industry sustaining Norfolk for over two generations, left us April 25th, 2020 to be with the Lord. A Dover lad, who lived the delights of Silver Lake, childhood adventures on fish tugs like the M&K, married well, traveled much, helped others, supported good works, trusted in Christ and was much blessed by the Lord. An inductee in the Delhi Tobacco Museum for his Gas Magic Burner, Tobacco Humidifiers and his Continuous Curing System; he’s remembered by family, friends and many customers. Absent from the body, present with the Lord, Tom died in his home, family present, and has joined the loves of his life, the late Daisy Ereth Graham, and Jean Latimer Gordier, safe in the arms of Jesus. He leaves behind and will be remembered by his children, Heather Domke (Richard), Jeanne Ransom (Fred), Graham Post (Esther), (Linda Allison Post), 7 grandchildren, Jeremy, Daphane, Kathryn, Nicholas, Thomas, Brandon and Candice Beth; numerous great-grandchildren; a brother Keith, sister-in-law Janet; and Jean’s children, Linda (Gerry), Gail, Brian (Kathy), Norma (Ron), Jeanne (Bart), Jim (Kathy). An old-fashioned funeral is planned in future but to honour his passing, please give flowers to the living; or donations to the Gideons, Alzheimer’s Society of H-N, or Doctors Without Borders. Gwen Smith
SMITH, Gwendolyn (Gwen) Helen – It is with incredible sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Gwen Smith, surrounded by her family on May 7, 2020, age 75. She was the loving mother of Lisa (Greg) Bingleman of Port Dover, and Karla (Todd) Doyle of Woodstock. For nearly thirty years, she was the beloved life partner of Mike McRoberts of Woodstock. Gwen was an amazing grandmother to her grandchildren Joshua, Jordan, Lauryn and Carter. She was the dear aunt of Brenda (Taras) Petrynec, great-aunt of Zachar and Tatiana of Hamilton, and sister-in-law to Sandy (Dan) Farrell of Mississauga. Held dear by Jen (Musoke) and Oliver Sendaula of Niagara Falls. Gwen was a cherished friend and family member to many. Predeceased by her parents, Doris (2000) and Byron (1990) Forrest, and her sister Joan Smith (2006). Gwen was a deeply compassionate, caring, kind, generous person. She brought love and happiness to everyone in her life. She loved spending time with family and friends, cuddling her pets, watching the birds, reading, shopping, bowling, and going out to restaurants. Her warm smile and sense of humour brought joy to those around her. She will be deeply missed. Cremation has taken place as per her wishes. At a later date, a private family burial will take place at the Port Dover Cemetery. Lois Dyer
DYER, Lois passed away on Monday, April 27, 2020 at Charlotte Villa retirement Residence in her 77th year. Dear sister of Gail (Donald) Kennedy of Brighton, Jill (Cliff) Phipps of Caledonia and Leah Dyer of Walsh. Fondly remembered by nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents Albert and Rhea. Lois was an avid gardener, loved animals and enjoyed photography. Cremation has taken place with a private family graveside service to be held at a later date. Gordon Reid
REID, Gordon Alexander –passed away peacefully at Norview Lodge, Simcoe on Friday, May 1, 2020 in his 88th year. Dearly loved husband of Dora. Cherished father and father-in-law of Rob and Laura Reid, Elizabeth and Richard Goldman, and David and Debbie Reid. Proud and loving grandfather of Adam, Ben, Alexandra, Reid, Alexander and Piper. Will be lovingly remembered by his brother Alastair and his wife Heather. Predeceased by his sister Elizabeth von Steinner. Gord was a lifelong Doverite, a longtime employee and Sales Manager at Thomas A. Ivey & Sons, and gave countless hours to the community and numerous local organizations. He was a former Port Dover Lions Club member, a Mason of Erie Lodge, A.F. & A.M. #149, Port Dover, a volunteer for Senior Support Services and an Elder and very proud member of Knox Presbyterian Church and Choir. Gord was also a member of the Port Dover Town Council in the 1970s. Gord will be sadly missed by all who knew him, remembered for his great sense of humour, his many stories and songs, and for the great community member he was. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, a private family visitation was held, with his grandson Ben playing the bagpipes one last time for his Grandpa. A graveside service will be held at a later date. The family would like to thank all of the caring staff at Norview Lodge, Reverend Pamela Hogewoning for her beautifully prepared prayer, and Thompson Waters Funeral Home in Port Dover for making all arrangements.
