John Wells
WELLS, John Edward
(October 4, 1943 – October 27, 2020)
of Port Dover, passed away peacefully at his home with his loving family by his side. Betty was the love of his life and John was hers. Dearly loved father of John and Dean, and step-father of Betsy and Lisa. Loving and devoted grandfather of Elizabeth. Dear brother and brother-in-law of William Wells, Garry Wells, Vaughn Wells and dear friend Lorraine, Joyce and Wayne Lutes, Joan Kaloustian and dear friend Al, and Glenn Pearson. Predeceased by his youngest sister Sheila Pearson, and sister-in-law Joanne Wells. John will be sadly missed by many nieces, nephews and extended family. His friendship of 40 years with Tom Masschaele began when John served as best man when Tom married Sandy. Throughout the years their friendship grew to a steadfast relationship. John had a long career in teaching. His first two years were in Nova Scotia. He moved to Montreal to get his Masters of Education. It was at that time he met and married Betty and they welcomed their two sons John and Dean. In 1975 he decided to leave Quebec after 13 years and move to Ontario. John, Betty and family settled in Port Dover, where he continued his teaching career. He soon entered the local political scene and the rest is history. Over the next 40 years John tirelessly served his community of Port Dover and Norfolk. He served as councilman for Haldimand-Norfolk Regional Council, City of Nanticoke and Norfolk County Ward 6. As councilman he never let a call go unanswered and always tried his best to get any request fulfilled. The Board of Trade chose John as the town crier at Christmas; he led the Santa Claus Parade. In the evening at the bonfire on the beach he would pass out carol sheets, lead the carol singing and he loved the fireworks at the end. John was a dedicated fundraiser; he was Chair of the Fundraising Committee for the new Port Dover and Area Arena. He also was instrumental in the fundraising efforts for the Port Dover Lions Community Centre, the Sports Park and the new Port Dover Library. He was the founder of the Port Dover Foundation. John’s primary mission was to make Port Dover a better place for everyone. So it would be no surprise that he was chosen Port Dover “Citizen of the Year 2018”. He was a faithful member of Grace United Church. John always had a handshake, a smile and a few words for everyone he met. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered for everything he did for this community. He loved Port Dover and never wanted to live anywhere else. Due to the Covid-19 restrictions attendance at the Memorial Service will be by invitation by the family. Services will be Saturday, November 7, 2020 at 11 am and will be live-streamed on the Grace United Church website http://bit.ly/graceunitedlive. The Reverend Kathryn Vance officiating. Arrangements have been entrusted to Thompson Waters Funeral Home, Port Dover 519-583-1530. For those wishing, donations to the Port Dover Foundation or Grace United Church would be greatly appreciated. Online donations and/or condolences can be made at www.thompsonwatersfuneralhome.ca

Carolyn Field
FIELD, Carolyn – Left this earth on Friday, November 6, 2020 at home in the arms of her family. She was surrounded by flowers, and the beautiful fall colours of the trees and fields. She was treasured mother to Donna (Keith) Hartnell, Lynda (Al) Newhouse, Sara Galimberti, Joe (Jennifer) Field. Sister of Cheryl (Ron) Martin and Sara (Mike) Cudbertson, predeceased by sister Gwen Wingfield and parents Tom and Leila Davies. Aunt to many nieces and nephews who all have special stories of their time spent at the family farm. Carolyn loved to help others and would treat you as her own. Once a nurse always a nurse, she would keep doctors on their toes and provide informal care to others long after her years working at the Norfolk General Hospital. Serenity Burial & Cremation Services Inc., 361 Main Street, Port Dover N0A 1N0, (226) 290-9093 have been entrusted with the arrangements. In keeping with Carolyn’s wishes donations can be made in her memory to Ronald McDonald House, 1510 Main St W, Hamilton, ON L8S 1E3, Lansdowne Children’s Centre (Mr. Tutt Fund), 39 Mt Pleasant St, Brantford, ON N3T 1S7 or a charity of your choice. More importantly take her good deeds and pay them forward. Help someone in her name. Hold a baby for a young tired mother, see the elderly person needing a meal or drive, knit mitts and socks for cold hands and feet, feed a farmer who is working day and night to feed a community, pick up after yourself, support a thrift store, go camping, forgive yourself, forgive others. We trust she was met with a ‘landslide of love’ in heaven. Where she found a cool breeze, a porch swing, a lap dog and the joy of being free at long last. Cremation has taken place, with a private internment at Port Dover Cemetery. The family would like to thank Dr. Mark Miller and palliative care nurse Elana Lloyd for their support and guidance during her last weeks. Geraldine Reise
REISE, Geraldine Helen (Muntz) of Ancaster, Ontario died peacefully at the age of 97 on November 15, 2020 at her Amica residence in Dundas.
Geraldine’s life-long devotion was to her family. She adored her husband Leo Charles Reise for 72 beautiful years, was lovingly proud of her three sons and cherished her grandchildren and great- grandchildren.
She spent much of her life at a rink … watching her accomplished husband Leo C. pursue his NHL career. Geraldine was Leo’s consummate assistant to his professional career; and was his unwavering support for his University Degree(s).
She had a heart of gold in every sense… she believed in the power of forgiveness which came from her spiritual belief.
She was proud of each grandchild and their accomplishments and would never miss a celebration in their honour. She would listen to their stories with intensity and love and would provide guidance and support with every phone call and written letter.
To her daughters-in-law, Geraldine was the exemplary mother-in-law. She held their hand, provided a warm hug and a gentle word of encouragement to lift their spirit during challenging times. Even though her body was petite her shoulders were immense to provide the caring like no other.
To her sons, Leo G., Charles and Norman – she adored and respected them with her every breath. She provided guidance, love and support at every stage of their life. They in-turn were eternally devoted to their Mom.
Geraldine believed in her faith and was an active member to Marshall Memorial United Church. Her love of hockey continued into her 90s as she maintained season tickets to the Hamilton Bulldogs. She believed in The Arts by supporting and enjoying performances at the Lighthouse Theatre in Port Dover. Geraldine’s love of travel with her husband was admirable… every visit to every country was an adventure and the stories they shared captured everyone’s undivided attention. She was an active member of the Hamilton Golf and Country Club where she perfected her consistent golf swing (slow and controlled) and enjoyed many rounds with her athletic husband. Her winter sports included skating hand-in hand with Leo and curling in local leagues and bonspiels. In Geraldine’s spare time she enjoyed the art of knitting and quilting. Cruising the Great Lakes in their sailboat “Windflower” was an extra special experience for them… no matter the weather, the joy of being on the water in their vessel was magical. The sweetest place that brought her the greatest sense of peace was their cottage at Bucks Park in Port Dover… every summer for 70 years without fail, the cottage was opened for the family to enjoy… she experienced every wave on their boat, shared stories with her neighbours and loved to spend the time with her siblings (Gary, Jack and Doris) and their families.
Geraldine was predeceased by her loving husband Leo Charles Reise in 2015. As well, she was also predeceased by her sister Doris Young and sister-in-law Ella Hanson. Geraldine leaves to mourn her three sons Leo G. (Donna) Reise of Hamilton, Ontario, Charles (Susan) Reise of Cambridge, Ontario and Norman (Jeanette) Reise of Calgary, Alberta; 7 grandchildren Lee-Ann Heffler (Shawn), Steven Reise (Julie), Jonathon Reise (Marisa), Katie Vollmerschausen (Chris), Paula Reise (Kevin Gibbs), Dawn Reise-Ward (Boyd), Carly Reise (TJ McNamara) who have given them 14 beautiful great-grandchildren. As well, she leaves to mourn her two brothers Gary (Minta) Muntz and Jack (Barb) Muntz and sister-in-law Christine French plus numerous nephews and nieces.
Due to the COVID pandemic, a private internment has taken place at White Chapel Memorial Gardens in Hamilton. A celebration of life will be announced when the COVID pandemic is under control and gatherings are allowed.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Reise Family Foundation, initiated by Geraldine three years ago, which supports medicine research and underprivileged children in sports and education. RFF address – 44 Bocce Drive, Mount Hope, ON L0R 1W0
