Violet Buchner
BUCHNER, Violet O. (nee McQueen) 1911-2012. The loved and honoured matriarch of our large family passed away peacefully at the age of 101 on November 5, 2012. Born in Port Dover, Ontario, she was proud to be a descendant of one of its founding families. She was predeceased by her husband of over 60 years, Mark R. Buchner, by her sister Lydia Hawke (late Grant) and a step-brother Bruce McQueen. She is survived by her step-brother Ron McQueen, and her children Connie Penwarden (late Bob), Frances Rawson (Bill), Anne Pultz (late Alvin), Jim Buchner (Bev) and Margaret Dunsmore (David). She was a loving and caring presence in all our lives. Her 19 grandchildren, 24 (almost 25) great-grandchildren and three (almost four) great-great-grandchildren will miss her dearly, and will remember especially her facility in feeding and taming chipmunks. Mark and Vi lived in Ottawa for some thirty years, and upon retirement enjoyed many winters in Florida and summers at Muskrat Lake in Cobden. Vi was widowed while living in Pembroke, later moved back to Ottawa, and spent her last years at Extendicare West End Villa, where she kept an active mind by staying involved with family and pursuing hobbies with delight: euchre, bingo, reading and word puzzles. Our thanks to the staff at West End Villa, especially those on the fourth floor, for their excellent care and kindness. Beulah Saville
SAVILLE, Beulah (nee Stott) passed away peacefully at Cedarwood Nursing Home, Simcoe on Friday, November 9, 2012 in her 97th year. Beloved wife of the late Frank Saville. Cherished mother of Allan Saville (Donna) of Port Dover, Noreen Sargus (late Gary) of Port Colborne, Keith Saville (Sharon) of Combermere and the late Fern Gamble of Port Colborne. Beulah will be lovingly remembered by her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In keeping with Beulah’s wishes, her ashes will be interred next to her devoted husband Frank at Oakwood Cemetery in Port Colborne in a private family service. Cindy Gaston
GASTON, Cindy (nee Evans) of Port Dover, passed away at Dover Cliffs LTC Centre on Wednesday, November 7, 2012 in her 69th year. Loving mother of Karen (Brian) Van Ooteghem and family, and Daryle (Lori) Gaston and family. Cindy will be greatly missed by her sisters Dianne Telfer, Karen (Colin) Smith, Jane Kapel, Miriam MacKenzie and Wendy Evans, as well as her step-father Harvey Gundry, step-sister Marilyn (Allan) Carlson and step-brother Alan (Cathy) Gundry, many nieces, nephews, cousins, dear friends and extended family members. Predeceased by her parents Ken Evans and Reta Evans-Gundry, her brother Dale Evans and brothers-in-law Al Telfer and Steve Kapel. She was a former member of the Port Dover Kinette Club, an active member of the Dover Girl’s Club, and a loyal friend to many. Ruth Hind
HIND, Ruth. Passed away on Tuesday, November 13, 2012 in her 86th year. Predeceased by her parents Ernest and Annie (nee Bannister) and brother Jack. Ruth was born in Port Dover but spent her working years in Toronto, retiring from ITT in 1982. She then returned to Port Dover to spend her retirement years. Ruth will be missed by her cousins and friends. Thank you to the staff at Hampton Terrace Care Centre of Burlington for their kindness and compassion. A private family service was held followed by interment at Port Dover Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Thompson Waters Funeral Home, Port Dover (519-583-1530). Harvey Gundry
GUNDRY, Harvey Everett. October 30, 1909 – November 21, 2012.
Harvey was born October 30, 1909 at Harding, Manitoba to Fred and Charlotte Gundry. He moved to Venn, Saskatchewan in 1911. Harvey attended Kilmory School until he was 14 years of age, when at that time he quit and helped his dad farm. It was at this time Harvey fell in love with farming. He met and married Myrtle Dahl in 1933. When they married Harvey had $10 in his pocket and he gave the minister $5 and he felt bad because he couldn’t give him more. In the fall of 1942 he almost died as the combine fell on his chest. They had two children, Marilyn in 1938 and Allan in 1942. Myrtle passed away in December of 1979. Harvey remarried Reta Evans in 1981. Harvey enjoyed fishing and travelling. He was also involved in trucking and was in partnership with Hugo Engele in the International-Harvester dealership in the 1950’s. Harvey did custom combining in Saskatchewan and the United States for a few years. He also had the Royalite Gas business for several years and then sold it to Len Mason of Venn. In 1933 Harvey and Myrtle moved to Port Dover – Simcoe, Ontario where they picked up milk and delivered it to the creamery and Myrtle worked as a hairdresser. They remained there for three years and then moved back to Sask. Harvey loved fixing and painting machinery. He would visit and tell stories to anyone, who would lend him their ear. Harvey was predeceased by his parents Fred and Charolette; sister Clara; wives Myrtle and Reta; daughter-in-law Sophie and grandsons James, John and David. He is survived by his son Allan (Cathy Schmidt); daughter Marilyn (Allen Carlson); grandchildren Edward, Marie, Carolyn and Mark; thirteen great-grandchildren and also several stepdaughters; Dianne Telfer, Karen Smith, Jane Kapel, Miriam McKenzie, Wendy Evans and the late Cindy Gaston, all of Port Dover. Harvey resided in his own home in Watrous until two days before peacefully passing away in his sleep at Lanigan Hospital on Wednesday, November 21, 2012. At his request, there will be no Funeral Service. Cremation. Interment will take place at a later date. For those so wishing donations to Venn Cemetery or Venn Community Hall would be appreciated. Marti Walker
WALKER, Marti – Passed away suddenly at his home, in his bed, on Saturday, November 24th, 2012. Mr. Marti Walker of Simcoe in his 62nd year. Beloved husband of Carmin (nee Graham) for 39 years. Loving brother to Lori Walker. Cherished nephew of Carol Ludwig. Marti will be sadly missed by other relatives and friends. Marti was a Barber in the Simcoe and Port Dover area since 1969. He was a devoted Christian. Marti’s love of music touched many people over the years. He was gifted in performing and writing music. He had a love of sports and was a great athlete, but for Marti he did it his way “All or Nothing”. At Marti’s request cremation has taken place.
