Barbara Ryerse

RYERSE, Barbara Ruth of Port Dover, passed away on Thursday, July 26, 2012 at Norview Lodge; born on September 1, 1918 in Mansonville, Quebec. Wife of the late H. Vernon Ryerse to whom she was married for 57 years; predeceased by her son, Michael; her parents, Rev. Archie and Mrs. Lena Sisco; siblings, George Sisco (Dora), Ted Sisco, Della Mae Gray (Henry), and Dorothy Lunn (Ross). She is survived by her children: Jan Ryerse (Sheila) of St. Louis, Missouri, Jane Uloth (Brian) of Burlington and daughter-in-law Andree Delisle of Toronto; grandchildren: Tashya Riggs (Lane) of San Antonio, Texas, Amy Moser (Ron) of Glendale, Missouri, Bryson Uloth (Danielle) of Hong Kong, China, and Krista Uloth (John MacMillan) of Toronto; as well as nine great-grandchildren and sister-in-law Eleanor Sisco. Barbara was a long-time member of Grace United Church in Port Dover where she also was a member of Unit Two. While raising her family, she began a lengthy educational quest by taking extension classes, often with husband Vern, through both McMaster University and University of Western Ontario (UWO). She received her B.A. (1972) and M.A. (1977) in English from UWO and, after many years of intense study, including research at Yale and Oxford Universities, she wrote her thesis and received a PhD (1989) from UWO. Barbara continued to write occasional papers for English journals until about 5 years before her death. Her memory will be cherished by her family, many close friends, bridge club members, book club members, Unit members, and neighbours; her intellect will be appreciated into the future by those who read and study her work. Barbara’s family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff of Norview Lodge for their care and compassion. Eileen Wight

WIGHT, Beatrice (Eileen). At Norfolk General Hospital, on Thursday, July 26, 2012, in her 93rd year. Beloved wife of the late Frank Wight. Dearly beloved mother of Carolyn (Ora) MacKenzie of Port Dover and Sheila (Bevan) Smith of Simcoe. Lovingly remembered by her grandchildren Alison, Peter (Christie), Stuart (Julie), and Sarah (John) and her great-grandchildren Jesse, Trinity, Charlie, Baidyn, Scarlette and Owen. Eileen was a life member of the Marburg Women’s Institute, Mount Zion United Church and the U.C.W. Glenis Scott

SCOTT, Glenis (nee Stephens) of Port Dover, passed away at Norfolk General Hospital, surrounded by the love of her family, on Wednesday, August 1, 2012 in her 65th year. Cherished wife of Bill. Loving and devoted mother and grandmother of James and Kailey Scott and their children, Cody, Kiera and Warren, Joe Scott and Kristen Banfield and their children, Victoria, Summer, Alex, Caitlyn, Alexis and Emma. Much loved sister and sister-in-law of Suzanne Butler, Faith and Leonard Sears, Peter and Diana Stephens, Robert and Peggy Scott, Vinnie and Sandi Scott and Deanna Scott. Predeceased by her parents Cobourn (1980) and Marie (2004) Stephens, sisters Yvonne Snively (1981), and Barbara Braithwaite (2009), brothers, Lewellyn Stephens (2005), E. Linton Stephens (1975) and brothers-in-law David Braithwaite (2007), William Butler (2006), Laverne Snively (1984), and Charles Scott (1990). Glenis will be sadly missed by her many nieces and nephews. HAVILAND (Ryerse), Evelyn. At the Brantford General Hospital on Saturday, August 4th, 2012 in her 95th year. Beloved wife of the late Albert Haviland (2009) and Ted Ryerse. Loving mother of Robert Ryerse, Doris Downey and the late Lois Brandwood. Cherished grandmother of Barb, Bob, Vicki, Deb, Scott, the late Pamela, Brenda, Jamie, Janice, Kim, Kirk and David. Evelyn is lovingly remembered by many great-grandchildren as well as several great-great-grandchildren. Mary Burfoot

BURFOOT, Dorothy “Mary” (nee Barrett) of Port Dover, passed away at her residence, with her loving family by her side on Sunday, August 12, 2012 in her 88th year. Predeceased by her husband Leonard (September 1986). Cherished mother and mother-in-law of Frances and Kim Parker and Philip and Mary Burfoot. Proud and loving grandmother of Cody Parker (Leanne), Leigh Parker, Samantha Parker, Erik Parker, Brian Burfoot (Tiffany), Kathleen Burfoot, and great-grandmother of Mia Parker. Dearly loved sister and sister-in-law of Harry B. Barrett and Joan, and Emily Molewyk. Will be missed by her many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her sisters Alice (Gay) Browne and Sister Nonah (Norah). Mary operated Crabapple Creek Bed and Breakfast and Retirement Home for several years, and she was a long-time member of St. Paul’s Anglican Church. Fraser McClung

McCLUNG, Howard Fraser of Port Dover passed away at Brantford General Hospital on Tuesday, August 14, 2012 in his 90th year. Beloved husband of the late Agnes McClung (2008). Loving father and father-in-law of Richard and Jeannie of New York State, Gordon and Pearl of Burlington, Wayne and Maureen of Cambridge, and Brian and Vicki of Port Dover. Proud grandfather to numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Much loved brother and brother-in-law of Jessie and Wilmer Kellner, Dorothy Weir and Hartley and Ruth McClung. Predeceased by brother-in-law Art Weir. Fraser, along with his wife Agnes, established McClung Nursery on Hwy 6 over 60 years ago and he still occasionally wandered the nursery now operated by his son Brian and wife Vicki. He was a proud veteran serving in WWII with the Royal Canadian Navy, and was a founding member of the Port Dover Horticultural Society and founder of the Norfolk Master Gardeners Association. Fraser was also Past President of the Norfolk Field Naturalists and a vendor at the Simcoe Market for over 30 years. A long-time member of Grace United Church, he will be sadly missed by many family and friends. Daphne Tilbury

TILBURY, Daphne, of Port Dover, passed away at Norfolk General Hospital on Saturday, August 18, 2012 in her 87th year. Beloved wife of the late William Tilbury (1992). Loving mother of the late William Tilbury (1990), David (Sandie) Tilbury, and Gayle (John) Elms. Sadly missed by her grandchildren; Tina (Chris) Swarts, Kim (Steve) Doyle, Jennifer (Chris) Martin, Melissa (Anthony) D’Alimonte, and Robert Tilbury (Crista Lewis-Davis). Loving great-grandmother of Marley, Isaijah, Addison, Aidan, Max, Ayla, Cole and Cailem. Daphne was born in Rangoon, Burma (Myanmar). She came to Canada in 1946 as a war bride, with her Royal Canadian Air Force husband, William. Together they settled in Hamilton, Ontario and raised three children. She was a manager at Stoney Creek Dairy for many years. After retirement they settled in Port Dover where they had many good times. Daphne was a member of St. Cecilia’s Roman Catholic Church in Port Dover. She will be lovingly remembered by all who knew her. The family would like to thank the staff at Norfolk General Hospital for their care and compassion during Mom’s brief illness. A special thanks to Mom’s good friend Mary McGrath-Coppens for all the kindness she has shown over many years. In keeping with Daphne’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Gloria Walker

WALKER, Gloria Jean (Cline) of Port Dover, peacefully at home Thursday, August 16, 2012, in her 65th year, surrounded by her family, after a courageous battle with cancer. Beloved wife of 45 years to Gordon Walker. Cherished mother and mother-in-law to Marcia and Steve Bartlett of Simcoe, Rick and Lisa Walker of Port Dover and Bill Walker of Peterborough. Proud and loving grandmother of Savannah and Matt LeBlanc, Christopher Bartlett and Jessica Barker, Hayden and Raine Walker, Addy and Seth Walker, Taigan and Matt Bombay and Tyler Walters, great-grandmother of Parker LeBlanc and Bennett Bombay. Predeceased by her loving mother Grace Cline and loving grandparents James and Dorothy Cline, Gloria was an amazingly loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by all her family. Denis Goulden

GOULDEN, Denis Frederick, of London, Ontario, on August 25, 2012 at Chateau Gardens, at the age of 86. Beloved husband of Maggie, for 65 years. Predeceased by their son, Ian, in 1973. A wonderful husband, father and grandfather, he will be sadly missed by his children, Denise of London, Lorraine of Chile, Anne (Steve Harold) of Sarnia, Bev (Dwight McLeod) of Port Ryerse, and grandchildren Josh, Mike and Kate Harold, and Dylan and Colton McLeod. He is also survived by family in England, sisters Wendy, Hazel, Pat, and niece Judi (Tony) Faulkner. Denis was born in Weymouth, Dorset, England. He served in H.M. Royal Navy in World War II and emigrated to Canada with his wife and two young children in 1953. Three more children and a life filled with jokes, laughter and an undying love of animals followed. He spent his free time sailing the “Maggie D” on Lake Huron while staying at the cottage he built in Point Clark, and subsequently cruising the wonderful waters off Vancouver where they lived for seven years prior to retiring back to Ontario. In retirement, Denis discovered a new talent, watercolour painting, which resulted in many beautiful works of art. A Chartered Life Underwriter, Denis’s career with London Life Insurance spanned 32 years and he retired in 1986 as the DSD Regional Director of BC and Alberta. Everyone who knew Denis will remember his great sense of humour, and his hearty laughter. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 29, 2012 from 11:00 to 12:00 at John T. Donohue Funeral Home, 362 Waterloo Street, London, Ontario. Funeral Service will follow in the chapel at 12:00. Inurnment to follow at Holy Family Mausoleum – St Peter’s Cemetery. If desired, memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer’s Outreach Society or the London Humane Society. Robert Haggart

HAGGART, Robert George, of Port Dover. It is with extreme sadness that we announce the passing of our Dad at Norfolk General Hospital on August 26, 2012 in his 89th year. Predeceased by his loving wife Mary. He will be forever remembered by his children Jean (Ed) Gulley of Port Dover, Jane (Bryan) Floer of Calgary, Joanie (John) Campbell of St. Albert, Jan Haggart of Calgary and Robert (Donna) Haggart of Edmonton. Cherished grandfather of James Misner, Amy (Nick) Malinski, Shauna (Scott) Colquhoun, Christina (Brennen) Moore and Katy Moore. Loving great-grandfather of Brodie Colquhoun and Kaityn Matthews. Robert was a decorated WWII veteran of the Canadian Army proudly serving his country for over 33 years. In keeping with his wishes cremation has taken place. Richard Mead

MEAD, RICHARD W, of Port Dover, (formerly of Sault St. Marie), passed away at his home on Friday August 24, 2012 in his 69th year. Cherished father and father-in-law of Christine and Dan Garcia, and Caroline Mead all of Oakville. Proud and loving grandfather of Mason Mead-Guite, Hannah Garcia, Rebekah Garcia and Marcos Garcia. Dearly loved brother and brother-in-law of Peter and Darlene Mead and John and Brenda Mead all of Sault St. Marie. Predeceased by his parents Leonard and Madge Mead. Richard will be missed for his love of life and sense of humour, a wonderful and caring father and grandfather; he will be lovingly remembered by all his family and dear friends. Margaret Schilz

SCHILZ – Margaret Sarah (Pettit). Passed away at the Norfolk Hospital Nursing Home on Wednesday, August 22, 2012 in her 105th year. Born in LaSallette in 1908, she was a former long-time resident of Port Dover. She was the much beloved wife of the late Ted Schilz and loving mother of Mary Anne Schilz and her husband Richard Cowper of Ottawa. Also surviving are nieces and nephews and friend Alexandra Drennan. Mrs. Schilz was predeceased by her parents, sisters Mary Dettinger and Zita Clarke; brothers Cy, Steve and Father Carl. Margaret’s husband had operated the J.N. Schilz & Sons Hardware in Port Dover and she was a longtime member of C.W.L. of St. Cecelia’s Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, August 27, 2012 at 11 a.m. from St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 211 Union St. Simcoe. Reverend Father S. Savel Celebrant. Followed by interment at Port Dover Cemetery. The Baldock Funeral Home, 96 Norfolk St. N., Simcoe in care of arrangements.
